How to Care for a Sphynx Cat: Grooming Guide

Sphynx cats are known for their striking hairless appearance and affectionate personalities. While they may not require the brushing and shedding control that other cats do, Sphynx cats have unique grooming needs that are just as important. Without fur to absorb the oils their skin produces, these cats need regular cleaning and attention to maintain their skin’s health and cleanliness. Here’s a complete guide to grooming a Sphynx cat.

1. Regular Bathing

How often to bathe your Sphynx cat:

  • Bathe them every one to two weeks to keep their skin clean and oil-free.

Bathing tips:

  • Use a gentle, unscented cat shampoo. Avoid human shampoos, as they can be too harsh and dry out their skin.
  • Make sure the water is warm but not too hot, as Sphynx cats are sensitive to temperature.
  • Gently wash your cat’s entire body, focusing on areas like the neck, belly, and armpits, where oils may build up the most.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap, as any residue can irritate their skin.
  • After the bath, pat your cat dry with a soft towel and make sure they stay warm afterward.

2. Cleaning Their Ears

Without fur in or around their ears, Sphynx cats tend to accumulate wax more quickly than other cats. Regular ear cleaning is essential to prevent infections and discomfort.

Steps for cleaning ears:

  • Use a cotton ball or pad (avoid cotton swabs) and a cat-safe ear cleaner.
  • Gently wipe the visible areas of the ears to remove dirt and wax buildup.
  • Clean their ears once a week or as needed, depending on how much wax accumulates.

If you notice any signs of infection, like redness, excessive scratching, or a foul smell, consult your veterinarian.

3. Eye Cleaning

Sphynx cats can develop a slight buildup of eye discharge because they lack eyelashes to protect their eyes from debris. It’s important to clean their eyes regularly to prevent irritation or infection.

How to clean your Sphynx cat’s eyes:

  • Use a soft, damp cloth or cotton pad soaked in warm water to gently wipe away any discharge around the eyes.
  • Clean their eyes daily or whenever you notice discharge.

4. Moisturizing the Skin

Since Sphynx cats don’t have fur to protect their skin, it’s important to keep their skin moisturized, especially in dry climates or during the colder months.

Moisturizing tips:

  • Use a pet-safe moisturizer or coconut oil, applying a small amount and rubbing it gently into their skin.
  • Only moisturize if necessary, as over-moisturizing can clog pores and cause skin issues.

Consult with your vet for recommendations on safe moisturizers if you’re unsure.

5. Nail Care

Sphynx cats need regular nail trimming. Without regular maintenance, their nails can grow too long or even become ingrown. Also, dirt and oils can collect in the folds of their toes, so it’s important to keep their paws clean.

How to trim your Sphynx cat’s nails:

  • Use cat nail clippers and gently trim the tips of the nails every two weeks.
  • Be careful not to cut too close to the quick (the pink area inside the nail), as this can cause pain and bleeding.
  • After trimming, wipe their paws and in between their toes with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or oil.

6. Sun Protection

Sphynx cats are sensitive to the sun due to their lack of fur. Too much exposure to direct sunlight can lead to sunburn, which can be painful and harmful to their skin.

Sun protection tips:

  • Keep your Sphynx cat indoors or limit their time in the sun.
  • If they are exposed to sunlight, consider applying a pet-safe sunscreen to protect their skin. Be sure to consult your vet for a product that is safe for cats, as many human sunscreens are toxic to them.

7. Temperature Control

Because they don’t have fur, Sphynx cats are more sensitive to temperature changes. In colder weather, they can get chilly easily, while in warmer conditions, they may need to avoid overheating.

Tips for keeping your Sphynx cat comfortable:

  • Provide them with a cozy, warm spot to rest, like a soft blanket or heated bed during colder months.
  • Avoid exposing them to drafts or letting them sleep in cold rooms.
  • In hot weather, make sure they have access to shade and cool areas to prevent overheating.

7. Litter Training

We recommend a non-dust forming, clumping litter. Your Sphynx will be litter trained when they come home. We put in a lot of effort to ensure that our Kittens are litter trained.  Our cats are trained to use both covered and non-covered litter boxes.
